** Bauernfeind, E. & T. Soldán: The
Mayflies of Europe. (Ephemeroptera). Publication early 2008. 24 x 17 cm.
Approx. 400 pages. Numerous colour photos and black and white illustrations.
ISBN 87-88757-45-5. EUR 92,00 / US$ 128.00 / DKK 640,00.
Among the various groups of aquatic insects mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are of
especial interest for professional limnologists and entomological researchers as
well as for naturalists in general and even the dedicated fly-fisherman.
Identification has traditionally been considered difficult and implementation in
environmental monitoring and freshwater management has led to an ever increasing
demand for exact information on taxonomy and ecology.
The present handbook is designed to provide for the first time an up-to-date
standard work for Ephemeroptera identification, including last instar larvae
(nymphs), subimago (dun), male and female imagines. Recent changes in
nomenclature are discussed in detail as well as gaps in current knowledge and
probable pitfalls concerning the reliable identification of all taxa known so
far from the region. Keys are provided for genera and introductory chapters
characterize every family and genus. Species accounts follow a common format
providing a synonymy, characters for identification (including literature
references), remarks (on variation, confusing or extralimital species) and short
informations on biology and distribution pattern. Key characters are illustrated
by micrographs and line drawings, REM photographs of the egg chorionic structure
are provided for genera and selected species. Taxa recognizable in the field are
illustrated by colour photographs.
The geographical area covered is Europe (west of the former U.S.S.R.) and
includes the mediterranean islands. Short additional information is provided for
adjacent parts of the western Palaearctic Region, i. e. North Africa, Turkey and
the European part of the former U.S.S.R. A comprehensive index, check-list and
distribution catalogue (following the widely adopted concept of Illies’
Limnofauna Europaea) allow for quick information on all species recorded so far
from Europe.
Contents: Abstract; Introduction; Key to the European genera (larvae); Key to
the European genera (imagines); Check-list; Systematic treatment (family, genus,
species); Distribution catalogue; Colour plates; Illustrations of larvae (line
drawings); Illustrations of male genitalia (b/w photographs or line drawings as
available; Illustrations of eggs (REM photographs); References; Index.

series
from ISBS.
Vol. 1: Rücker, W.: Latridiidae, Merophysidae
and Dasyceridae. Publication
late 2007. Aprox. 600 pages incl. about 20 colour plates. Identification
keys. Line drawings. ISBN 87-88757-71-4. Price approx. EUR
100,00 / US$ 140.00 / DKK 700,00.
The most important work on European
Coleoptera in the 20th century was "Die Käfer Mitteleuropas" which appeared
in 15 volumes plus further volumes on larvae, ecology and catalogue.
Coleoptera of Europe will in the same way be the most important
European work on Coleoptera in the new century.
This new series is aimed at
providing brief, concise identification guides, to all European Coleoptera,
and is intended both for professional and amateur entomologists. Up till now
consice publications are completely lacking for most groups of European
Coleoptera. The most comprehensive work is up till now Die Käfer
Mitteleuropas.
Each volume will treat a systematic unit comprising about 150-500 species.
This will usually mean a family or subfamily, but it can also be a single
large genus, or a group of smaller families. Small and systematically
unrelated groups may also be collected in one volume. The volumes are
published as manuscripts become available and not in a systematical order.
The geographical area covered will include Europe west of the former USSR,
but including Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. Authors may also include one or
more of the adjacent parts of the western Palaearctic Region, i. e.:
Macaronesia, North Africa (Maghreb countries), Cyprus, Asia Minos, Lebanon,
Israel, the European part of Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, as well as the
Transcaucasian area (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaidzjan).
Each volume should be well illustrated, and where it is useful for the
identification, all species can be shown in colour, either by colour
photographs or by water colours. Sexual dimorphism and extensive
polymorphism may also be illustrated. All specimens, except the largest,
will be shown enlarged. Male and female genitalia as well as other
morphological details nessesary for the identification, either as line
drawings or as black and white photographs. |

DANMARKS
DYRELIV (Animal Life of Denmark.) 25 x 17 cm. Hardback.
Vol. 2: Skou, P.: Nordens Målere. (Handbook on the Geometroid Moths of Denmark,
Norway, Sweden and Finland.) 1984. 330 pages. 358 text figures. 24 colour plates. ISBN
87-88757-00-5.
... EUR 72,00 / US$ 100.00 / DKK 500,00.
Volume 2 of the series "Animal Life of Denmark" treats the Drepanidae and
Geometridae occurring in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland, a total of 359 species. The
series is edited by Dr. L. Lyneborg, Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen. The 24
colour plates in the book are also used in "The Geometrid Moths of North Europe"
which is a translation of this Danish original edition, and the Finnish books "Suomen
Perhoset. Mittarit 1 & 2". In the text part of the book, each specimen is dealt
with in the following chapters: Description, Range, Habitat, Flight time, and Biology. The
distribution in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland is treated seperately for each
country. The 358 figures in the text are detailed drawings of wings pointing out the
differences in species difficult to separate, genitalia drawings where necessary for the
identification, and black and white photos of habitats and larvae of a number of species.
At the end of the book, distribution tables based on the zoogeographical districts of the
four countries are given. Text in Danish.
Vol. 4: Palm, E.: Nordeuropas prydvinger. (Handbook on the Oecophorid Moths of North
Europe.) 1989. 247 pages. 8 colour plates. 213 text figures. Distribution maps and English
summary to each species.ISBN 87-88738-08-6.
... EUR 72,00 / US$ 100.00 / DKK 500,00.
Volume 4 of the series "Animal Life of Denmark" is treating the North
European species of the family Oecophoridae, which means all species known from Denmark,
Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Northern Poland, Northern Germany as
far south as the Harzen Mountains, and Holland. This book with its many illustrations and
extensive text makes the Oecophoridae just as easy to work with as most groups of
Macrolepidoptera. In all parts of Europe the book will be most useable because no book on
this family has been published for decades. The colour plates are excellent and of such a
quality, that many species can be identified from the plates alone. In the systematic part
of the book, the text is presented in three headings: Description, Distribution, and
Bionomy. The part on bionomy explains the habitat of the species, how to find the species,
flight period, description of the larva and how it lives including foodplant or
foodplants. The text is supplemented with 213 text figures showing much enlarged
photographs of wing patterns and genitalia of many species. Furthermore the text part also
includes approx. 200 distribution maps. By each species a short summary in English is
given. The bibliography mentions 398 titles. A free colour plate from the book is
available upon request
Vol. 6: Torp, E.: Danmarks Svirrefluer. (Hoverflies of Denmark.) 1994. 490 pages.
270 distribution maps. 21 colour plates. English summary to each species. Hardback with
dust cover. ISBN 87-88757-28-5.
... EUR 58,00 / US$ 80.00 / DKK 400,00.
A very impressive book on the Danish Hoverflies and highly praised in reviews. The
main part is a systematic treatise of the 270 species known from Denmark. For each species
the text is divided into the following chapters: Description, distribution, habitat,
flight time, flower visits, and larval biology. For each species the distribution in
Denmark is shown on a detailed 10 x 10 km UTM map. These maps are mainly based on a
mapping project running over a decade before publication. On the 270 distribution maps
there are nearly 35.000 dots, which means, that with 640 UTM squares covering Denmark, 54
species are in average known from each square. No other country has such a complete
mapping of the Syrphidae. The book also contains general chapters on biotope preference,
abundance and distribution patterns with many maps and photos. Furthermore the book
contains the first Danish Red Data List, as many species are seriously threatened or
vulnerable. This is mainly species related to old natural forests. The book also contains
a list of species as bio-indicators in natural forests and therefore it is most useable in
the work for nature conservation. Very important in the book are the illustrations of
which there are 21 very well produced colour plates. 12 of these illustrates all 270
Danish species, for many species both female and male, so that a total of 351 specimens
are shown. The remaining 9 colour plates are photographs of living specimens in the
nature, many of them in flight! Free colour brochure available.
Vol. 7: Palm, E.: Nordeuropas snudebiller. (Coleoptera: Curculinoidae). (The
Weevils of North Europe.) Part 1: Brachycerinae and Otiorhyncherinae. 1996. 356 pages. 8 colour plates. 491 text figures.
Distribution maps to all species. English summary to each species. ISBN 87-88757-38-2.
... EUR 72,00 / US$ 100.00 / DKK 500,00.
This volume treats the 163 species of Brachycerinae and Otiorhyncherinae known
from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Karelia, the surroundings of Sct. Petersburg,
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, northern Poland, the north German lowland to the Harzen
Mountains, The Netherlands, and Great Britain. Further 14 species found accidentally in
the area covered are also treated. The colour plates illustrate all species in superb
photographs of an hitherto unseen high quality. A total of 198 specimens are shown largely
magnified. The text figures are genitalias, morphological details important for the
identification etc. The distribution maps show the distribution by provinces in the area
covered, only Great Britain is omitted. Species occurring in Denmark have a detailed
distribution map of this country. The systematic part is for each species divided into the
following chapters: Description, where all details are carefully mentioned; Distribution,
where unusually many records and localities are mentioned; Bionomics, where habitat,
foodplants, time for occurrence etc. are explained in detail; Summary, where distribution
and bionomics are shortly summarized in 10-20 lines for each species. The weevil fauna of
North Europe will be covered by two or three further parts. They should appeal to
professional and amateur entomologists, nature conservationists, university and museum
libraries, higher educational institutions. A number of the species treated in part 1 can
be serious pests in agriculture and forestry.
Vol. 8: Fogh Nielsen, O.: De danske guldsmede. (Odonata.)
1998. 280 pages. 230 colour photos. Line drawings. Distribution maps to all species. ISBN
87-88757-21-8. ... EUR 43,00 / US$ 60.00 / DKK 300,00.
Together with the butterflies, the dragonflies are the most eye-catching insects in
the north European nature. So far only one book has treated the Danish species of these
beautiful and fascinating creatures: Espen Petersens dragonfly volume from 1910 in the
series "Danmarks Fauna". Therefore the present book is long wanted and much
needed. De danske guldsmede is an exceptionally beautiful book lavishly illustrated with
very fine colour photographs of all Danish dragonfly species and their habitats. The book
has a number of introductory chapters on Odonata in general and a systematic part treating
all 53 species under the following headings: Introduction, identification, habitat,
behaviour, lifecycle, flying time, and distribution. The description of the distribution
of each species is supplemented with a map, that also covers the southernmost Norway,
southern Sweden and northernmost Germany. There are illustrated keys to the adult larvae
and larval skins and to the males and females of the adult dragonflies. The book is
concluded with a short bibliography and two indexes, one to the dragonflies and one to the
plant species mentioned in the book. De danske guldsmede should appeal to both
professional and amateur entomologists as well as to those with a more general interest in
the nature that surrounds us. Furthermore the book will be a most useful tool for those
working with fresh water ecology and environment. Because of the many beautiful colour
photographs of the dragonflies and their habitats, the book will also be of great interest
to students of dragonflies, but without knowledge to the Danish language.
Vol. 9: Fogh Nielsen, O.: De
danske græshopper. (The Danish Grasshoppers). 2000. 24 x 17 cm.. 192 pages. 137
colour photographs. 70 line drawings. Including sound CD with songs of all species. Song
diagrams. Distribution maps. Systematic treatment of all species. Keys for identification.
Text in Danish. Hardback. ISBN 87-88757-50-1.
... EUR 43,00 / US$ 60.00 /
DKK 300,00.
Saltatoria are wellknown insects and characteristic animals for the summer and
early autumn. The north European species are not colourful like the butterflies or elegant
flyers as the dragonflies, but their song fascinates us, and for many people the
grashopper song is a part of the summer in the same way, as the bird song or the quacking
of the frogs are in the spring. De danske græshopper is a beautiful and richly
illustrated book, which in text and illustations comprehensively treats the 32 species of
grasshoppers known to occur in Denmark with informations about how to recognise each
species, their habitats, biology, behaviour and distribution. Further strong emphasis has
been put on a comprehensive and detailed interpretation of the songs of each species -
among other by the help of a large number of song diagrams. The book has very beautiful
colour photographs depicting all species, and on the accompanying CD there are 49 sound
recordings of the songs of all Danish grasshoppers. De danske græshopper is aimed for
both amateur and professional entomologists as well as for readers with a general interest
in nature. Many readers will know the author for his very well reviewed and similarly
beautifully illustrated De danske guldsmede.
Danmarks Dyreliv is aimed to cover the insect fauna of Denmark and
Fennoscandia or the whole of Northern Europe. Each volume treat a well defined
family with text in Danish, but with numerous illustrations that make the
volumes valuable also for non Danish readers. Volumes 1 on Hoverflies, 3 on
Pyralidae, and 5 on Noctuidae are out of print and now Volume 1 is replaced by
volume 6.

Water bugs are familiar insects in
aquatic habitats throughout the World. They belong to the order Hemiptera, the
largest insect order with incomplete metamorphosis. There are basically two
kinds: (1) the semiaquatic bugs (Gerromorpha) which live upon the water surface
and (2) the true water bugs (Nepomorpha) which live beneath the water surface.
Water bugs are found in a wide variety of natural habitats from small, temporary
pools to larger ponds and lakes, from small streams to rivers, and from inland
freshwater bodies to coastal mangroves, tidal pools of coral reefs, and the
surface of the ocean. Water bugs are chiefly predators or scavengers, feeding on
any prey they can master, from tiny crustaceans and insects to tadpoles and
small fish. They play a major role in aquatic ecosystems and may serve as
indicators of the biological quality of aquatic habitats. They are chiefly
beneficial to man since many species prey on mosquitoes and are themselves
preyed upon by fish. Because of their diverse lifestyles and because they are
easily observed in their natural habitats, water bugs are excellent model
organisms in evolutionary biology, ecology, and conservation biology. This
handbook is the first comprehensive guide facilitating the identification of
Australian water bugs. It provides an overview on all 15 families, 17
subfamilies, and 55 genera known to occur on mainland Australia, Tasmania and
nearby islands. Illustrated keys, featuring a minimum of technical language, are
offered to assist with the identification of adult water bugs. For each genus,
the handbook includes a description of the characters used to identify the genus
and to separate the genus from similar genera, an illustration to show overall
appearance ('habitus') of a representative species, an illustrated key to
species recorded from Australia, overview of the biology of the genus, and a map
showing the locations where the genus has been found in Australia.

The geographical area covered will be the whole of the geographical Europe. Each
volume will illustrate the adults of all species in photographical colour plates
of the best quality. Sexual dimorphism as well as polymorphism will be
illustrated and if possible all subspecies too. Most species will be shown in
natural size, but larger groups of small species such as the genera Idaea and Eupithecia will be shown enlarged.
Each species will be treated using the following format: Full name. Original reference to all
available nominal names (valid names and synonyms).
Diagnosis based on external features, including detail figures where
necessary. Male and female genitalia
of all species with line drawings or photographs. Distribution. A summary of the
European distribution and also of distribution outside the area treated. This
paragraph is completed with a map of the European distribution. Phenology with detailed information
about flight period or periods, if possible with reference to various parts of
the distribution area. Further also information about how the species hibernates
is provided. Biology including
hostplant(s). Habitat including
the altitude of occurence. Similar species
with the differences clearly pointed out. This paragraph may be completed with
text figures. Remarks on
information that does not fit into any of the other paragraphs.
The Geometrid Moths of Europe is intended for both professional and
amateur entomologists. Among the European Geometrid Moths are a number of
serious pest species, especially to forestry, and the series will therefore also
be an important tool in future pest management, hopefully especially in the
biological pest management.
Vol. 4 on Perizomini and Eupitheciini
has now been published and a number of very fine review has been written about
it in various entomological and lepidopterological journals.. Already now there
is no doubt, that this volume will mean a new era in the study of the European
species of these groups. All the Eupithecia species are illustrated in 1.5 times
natural size on the colour plates. A total of 151 species are dealt with in the
volume of which 133 are Eupitheciini. One new species is described and a number
of species are recorded from Europe for the first time.
Volume 4 sets new standards in the study of the European Eupitheciini and
Perizomini.
In
The Geometrid Moths of Europe volume
2 on Sterrhinae, the third volume in the series to be published, a number of
difficult genera such as Cyclophora,
Scopula and
Idaea are covered. Especially
Idaea with more than 100 species
occuring in Europe, has caused a lot of problems to identify, but based on the
many specimens illustrated on the 24 colour plate, the species of this genus can
be identified much easier now. Apart from its largest species, the genus
Idaea is illustrated in 1.5 times
natural size. The remaining Sterrhinae are in natural size on the colour plates.
On additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to
identify, their differential characters are pointed out with arrows. Three new
species and three new subspecies are described. As in the previously published
volumes 1 and 4, a map with the European distribution is given, and with dots
for verified specimens. Finally there are line drawings of male and female
genitalia of all species and also this volume contains a systematic catalogue of
the European species and including those of the neighbouring regions such as
North Africa, Macaronesia, Turkey, and the Middle
East.

Region are catalogued in this book. Fourteen new synonymies are established together with
44 new combinations and 8 reversions to original combinations of genus group and species
group names. Six generic and 7 species group names are removed from synonymy and
re-established as valid names. One name has been changed in status from species to
subspecies, and another the reverse. The diagnostic features of each genus are presented
and a brief summary is given of species that are probably wrongly placed generically. The
male genitalia of type species of most genera are illustrated by half-tone photographs and
the whole moth by colour photographs. Twenty genera have been removed from the Arctiidae
and placed in the families Noctuidae, Lymantriidae or Geometridae. One species has been

periods: before 1900, 1900-1959, and 1960 and later. A total of more than 27,500
records are included in the catalogue - more than 23,000 of the from the most
recent period. The introduction to the catalogue includes a number of faunistic
notes and, in particular, nomenclaturel and systematic notes. Comments about the
systematics are made with special reference to danish coleopteran literature. A
list of accidental migrants and (several) introduced species is given after the
catalogue of "genuine" (i. e. presumedly established) Danish species. The
chapter on classification and nomenclature summarizes the knowledge in these

1996. 29 x 21 cm. 380 pages. Hardback. ISBN 87-88757-01-3. EUR 86,00 / US$
120.00 / DKK 600,00
The first list to cover the entire European fauna of butterflies and moths since the
famous "Staudinger-Rebel Catalogue" which was published as long ago as in 1901.
A large number of European specialists have been working on the family/subfamily
treatments, and the list has been checked by leading experts in the national faunas. The
higher classification used in the checklist is in accordance with the most recent research
as it will be presented in the forthcoming treatment of Lepidoptera in the series
"Handbook of Zoology". Hopefully the list will lead to uniformity in the
systematics and nomenclature used in European lepidopterology! Besides being a checklist,
"The Lepidoptera of Europe" also indicates in table form, in which of the
European countries each species has been recorded. The occurrence is indicated for the
following countries/regions: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Corsica, Czech Republic,
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland,
Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania,
Sardinia, Sicily, the European part of the former Soviet Union (apart from Estonia, Latvia
and Lithuania), Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the European part of Turkey, and the former
Yugoslavia. As the checklist has been under preparation since the mid 1980's, some of the
recent changes of the European borders could not be taken into account. "The
Lepidoptera of Europe" contains more than 8.300 species known to occur in Europe and
the distributional tables have approximately 74.000 records! "The Lepidoptera of
Europe" will be an indispensable tool for anyone working with the European fauna of
any group of Lepidoptera. The book is published in a limited edition of only 800 copies.

Kononenko, V.:
Noctuidae Sibiricae. 24 x 17 cm.
Softcover.
Vol. 1: An annotated check list of the Noctuidae (s. l.) (Insecta,
Lepidoptera) of the Asian part of Russia and the Ural Region. 2005. 243 pages.
ISBN 87-89430-12-3. . . EUR 55,00 / US$ 76.00 / DKK 380.00
The aim of Noctuidae Sibiricae ‑ the first volume of four – is to fill the
last large gap of knowledge concerning Noctuidae of the northern
hemisphere: the vast area of Russian Sibiria from the Ural Mountains to
the Pacific Ocean. The area westwards is covered by Noctuidae Europaeae
and the other side by the series Moths of North America and the monograph
Moths of Japan. The author is probably the only that has sufficient
knowledge to compile this 4-volume work on Sibirian Noctuids, partly
because he from his home and work in the Russian Academy of Sciences (Far
Eastern Branch) in Vladivostok has studied and travelled all over this
vast area of still largely untouched nature, and partly because he has
access to all the many small and old reports published locally. Also
through the help of many fellow lepidopterists, this book‑series is made
possible. Volume I contains the full list of Noctuidae of Sibiria, not
previously available, and thoroughly commented. The systematics follow
that of the latest knowledge published (Fibiger & Lafontaine, 2005). The
area has been subdivided into 14 more or less natural biogeographic zones,
and the total Sibirian distribution is listed for each species and each
zone. Also the literature is described in detail for each zone. The
following three volumes is a systematic treatment incl. colour photos of
all species, and photos of the male and female genitalia, ‑ all in the
usual high Kononenko quality, ‑ already known from Noctuidae Europaeae,
Noctuidae of Korea, and Moths of Thailand. For anyone who has an interest
in noctuids and the study and determination of them, this new book series
should be highly welcome. |

Kudrna, Otakar: The Distribution Atlas of European Butterflies. 2002.
29 x 21 cm. 343 pages. Distribution maps to all species. (Oedippus No. 20.) Hardback. ISBN
87-88757-56-0. EUR 56,00 / US$ 78.00 / DKK 390,00.
In a very short time - only about six years after the Mapping European
Butterflies project was announced or some seven years since the preparations were
started - the results in the form of The Distribution Atlas of European Butterflies can
now be presented to the public. The database of the Atlas consists of 22893l data records
provided by 250 recorders from all over Europe or extracted from all the major national,
regional and private data banks. The Atlas contains about 450 dot distribution maps of all
the European butterflies. For the first time ever a distribution atlas of European
butterflies will be available and at the same time Europe will be the first continent ever
to have all its butterfly species plotted on precise and comprehensive distribution maps.
Apart from providing significant species specific chronological data for taxonomists and
biogeographers, the prime purpose of the Atlas is to aid and promote the conservation of
European butterflies. The analysis and evaluation of the distribution data contained in
the Atlas will facilitate the identification of priorities in selecting species and areas
for European significance for convervation purposes. Thus, The Distribution Atlas of
European Butterflies constitutes a major contribution towards the advancement of
our knowledge of European butterflies. |

** Larsen, T. B.:
Butterflies of West Africa, vol. 1-2. 2005. 28 x21
cm. 900 pages incl. 130 colour plates depicting approx. 3800 specimens.
Hardback. ISBN
87-88757-43-9. EUR 184,00 / US$ 256.00 / DKK 1280,00.
This book attempts to summarize all that is known about the
nearly 1,500 butterfly species known from West Africa, the fifteen countries
that stretch from Senegal and Mauritania on the Atlantic to Nigeria and Niger in
the east, touching also on the extreme western parts of Cameroun (Mauritania,
The Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Burkina
Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Bénin, Nigeria, and Niger). It is the result
of more than ten years of intensive personal research.
The fauna of West Africa accounts for well over a third of all
butterflies in the Afrotropical biogeographical region, and about one in twelve
of all butterflies known worldwide. Just 25 years ago the area covered was
believed to have just about 1,000 species.
The aims and objectives of the book are:
1) To describe and illustrate all West African butterflies in such a way that
most can be identified by non-specialists. Nearly all species are illustrated in
colour on the 125 plates, many of which have never been adequately figured
before. There are numerous illustrations of genitalia in difficult groups of
Lycaenidae and Hesperiidae.
2) To give their distribution over the fifteen countries of the region to the
extent that this is currently known, as well as their wider distribution in
Africa as a whole. The book thus comprises country records of known butterflies
in these countries, for most of which there are no previous published lists.
3) To indicate their habitats, habits, frequency and host plants as recorded or
personally observed.
4) To place the West African butterfly fauna in a total African perspective and
to give details of the ecological biogeography of West Africa.
5) To contribute to the urgent conservation efforts to maintain the biodiversity
of West Africa.
Butterflies are potentially an important group of indicator
species for biodiversity, ecology, and for biogeographical studies: but such a
role cannot be fulfilled unless they can be properly identified. They constitute
a large group of insects where baselines established now will allow for
long-term assessment of biodiversity loss. African butterflies have also
increasingly been used in studies of butterfly behaviour and in molecular
studies. In the absence of a book like this, confident identification of most
species was a matter mainly for specialists with access to museums and
specialist literature outside Africa. The butterflies of Kenya and their natural
history (Larsen 1991) was meant to fulfil the same role and it has been used
extensively in ecological and ethological studies, as well as conservation work
– not just in Kenya, but also in the neighbouring countries.
Though the author has reviewed virtually all literature on West
African butterflies, the book is largely the result of his personal research
programme in West Africa and in Museums. Before the project started he had
already visited Bénin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo
on various occasions. Between 1993 and 2003 he spent almost two years in the
field, in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and western Cameroun. Planned visits
the other coastal countries, especially Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia proved
impossible. Civil strife made this too dangerous, not least for someone without
formal institutional back‑up. However, a positive result of this constraint was
that some important forests in Ghana and Nigeria could be investigated in more
depth than any other localities in tropical Africa. Of equal importance has been
the study of much unpublished material, old as well as new, in museums and
private collections in many parts of the world. In this respect it was
especially important that the African Butterfly Research Institute (ABRI) in
Nairobi sent teams of collectors to many parts of West Africa – partly as
support to the project. Though ABRI shared the same constraints in terms of
access to many countries, much new data was procured – not least from
Guinea‑Bissau and Guinea.

Customer opinion about this
book: I can report that your book works
very well as a field-book and it survived the humidity better than I thought.
Apart from being a bit dirty and having a few pressed ants in between pages it
stood up very well. Before this last trip I always treated it very carefully but
now I found myself writing notes next to plates and bringing it along on long
hikes. I would not have been able to do much work in Nigeria at all without it!

to European Sesiidae published in 1995. This book was printed in a very limited edition
and was soon out of print. The Sesiidae of Europe contains comprehensive information on
all European species of this Lepidoptera family of day flying moths. All the many
taxonomical, biological and distributional changes in the last years are included.
Introductory chapters comprise a short historical outline, brief information on the
morphology, biology, phylogeny and distribution as well as collecting and rearing methods,
and lists of European Sesiidae and their hostplants. Keys to all European genera and
species are provided. The main part of the book presents a systematic survey of all
European species. Diagnostic morphological characters, bionomics and distribution of each
species are shortly described. For each species line drawings of male and female genitalia
are given, for some species also of other diagnostic characters. The distribution is
illustrated on maps. The book is concluded with 9 excellent colour plates with all
European species illustrated. The following new species are included in this book:
Synanthedon geranii Kallies, 1997, Bembecia volgensis Gorbunov, 1994, Synansphecia
hispanica Kallies, 1997, Tinthia hoplisiformis (Mann, 1864), Bembecia flavida (Oberthür,
1890) and Chamaesphecia maurusia Püngeler, 1912. The Sesiidae of Europe will be an
important manual for anyone working with this highly interesting and well defined
Lepidoptera family. It will serve as a tool not only for identification, but also for
future research in biology, distribution and taxonomy as well as conservation of the
European Sesiidae.

The Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland:
This very
well known series has so far been published by Harley Books in England. Annette
and Basil Harley, who comprise the entire staff of Harley books have years ago
passed the normal retirement age. They are therefore planning to retire from
active publishing in a couple of months. However, Annette and Basil Harley have
been most anxious that the remaining three volumes of the series should be
published. Therefore they have turned to us and it has beed decided, that we
shall continue and conclude the series with volume 5 on
Tortricidae, volume 6 on
Pyralidae and
Pterophoridae, and vol. 8 on
Geometridae. At the same time we
have taken over the remaining stock of the previous seven volumes of the series.
Back volumes as well as forthcoming volumes can be ordered directly from Apollo
